What To Consider When Handling Divorce And Children
Divorce and children is one of the perennially recurring themes whenever marriage break-up is discussed. There is no doubt that some of the more traumatic divorces have a profound effect on the mental state of children who are often still studying for crucially important exams. So often, though, the wrong conclusions are drawn. It is often assumed that the best solution for the children is to keep the marriage together at all costs to avoid them having to witness a messy divorce. In so many cases, the exact opposite is the truth.
There is no doubt that the divorce rates are continuing to rise, from an already very high level. The causes for this, however, may be more good than bad. Many of the stifling marriages where both partners agree it is time to get out can now be dissolved far more easily than in the past. This not only allows both partners to get on with their lives, it also shortens the time that the children will have to suffer the effects of the stifling marriage. The sooner children can once again know a settled home, the more likely they are to be able to continue with their education.
The major point to take in is that the process of divorce is far more difficult for children to deal with than the consequences. Most children are intelligent enough to realize that a very large percentage of marriages fail, and in the modern era they will almost certainly be at school with other children who have divorced parents, or children whose parents are about to divorce. This early exposure to the concept will help them greatly in coping with the effects. What is most certain is that no divorce is as traumatic for children as seeing parents who have grown to hate each other continually fighting.
It is, of course, the hotly contested divorces which cause the most problems for children. You cannot expect a child to witness parents angrily arguing every day and not be affected by it. While staying together for the sake of the children may be an unrealistic mantra, there is no doubt that trying to think of the children while you go through the process of divorce can save them a lot of problems in the future.
If the most important consideration when handling divorce and children is to cut down the time it takes for the decree to come through, it makes sense to take advantage of the new laws allowing no fault divorces. These quick divorces will have any children housed in a stable home as quickly as possible, which should be one of the priority goals of any sane parent. The changes in the law, if used properly, will have a beneficial effect on dealing with divorce and children.
