Why Divorce Rates May Be Increasing For Positive Reasons
Divorce rates continue to give cause for concern in many Western countries, although it has to be borne in mind that many of the comparisons don't tell the full story. The laws concerning divorce have gone through more dramatic changes in the last quarter of a century than ever before, and many of the people who would either have been waiting for a long time to have their expensive and messy divorce finally come through, or who would have stayed trapped in a broken marriage, are now able to quickly move on with their lives.
Percentages have increased slightly in these regions which have implemented the changes, and of course percentages have risen even more dramatically in the handful of countries where divorce is now allowed after centuries of being prohibited. These changes make the situation seem worse than it really is, although there is no doubt that failed marriages remain a huge problem in society. There has been a concerted effort to persuade more married couples to take counseling at an earlier stage, but part of the answer must be in making sure that less poorly matched couples get married in the first place.
The process of applying for, and getting, a divorce has changed for so many people. The ones who are really being helped by the more realistic new laws are the couples for whom everything has gone stale, who know that the only sensible course of action is to move on, and who have no real desire to take the other party into a court room and allege that some kind of fault has occurred. There are many of these marriages where both parties have already formed other relationships, and both just want to move on as quickly as possible.
One aspect of the divorce rate which is not considered enough is the effect on any surviving children. It is easy to say that a divorce is going to have a negative effect on a child's school performance, but will it not be far more debilitating for the child to constantly have to live in a situation where there is bad feeling and often unkind behavior? Is it not far better for the child to have a quick end to the failed marriage, and to move to a calm and settled home as quickly as possible?
Although divorce rates are causing many people concern, they have risen in recent times for the right reasons. It is now far easier for a hopeless marriage to be ended, and for the two parties to go their separate ways. The only pitfall to watch out for is the attempt by dishonest companies to persuade you that by spending money with them, you will be granted your divorce more quickly. This will almost certainly not be the case. Download the forms for your state, and be your own positive reason for an increase in divorce rates.
